Congratulations! You have finally decided to give your body a chance at living healthy and you did it by deciding to quit smoking! Good for you, my friend! We’ve all been there and we are all witnesses to tremendous hardships that one goes through when deciding to quit this terrible habit. But, once your body has adapted, everything goes smoothly! Thing is, when you have 30, 40, 50… or God knows how many years of smoking under your belt, you need something that will help you detox all those nasty chemicals from your body as quickly as possible. Believe it or not, nicotine, which is a primary addictive ingredient in cigarettes, is cleared from your system within 24 hours! What makes things more complicated are the 7,000 other chemicals found in cigarette smoke!

Your detox process may get rather unpleasant because of side effects of quitting smoking – mood swings, coughing, headaches, dizziness, constipation. Since all these are pretty hard to deal with, many quitters will look for a quick fix, have a drag and go back at the beginning. Try not to be this person. After all – by quitting smoking you are doing your body a huge favor, so stick to it! But, the question is – is there anything that will help your time heal faster? A few things, actually.

Time it up

First of the things to count on for your body detox is time – our bodies are amazing when it comes to their ability to heal. Our kidneys and livers work tirelessly 24/7, 365 days a year to filter our blood, and this is why the body starts its healing and detox process already after the last cigarette.

Drink Up

Your body needs to be hydrated in order to be healthy. Regular and proper hydration with approximately 8 glasses of water per day (or more) will do wonders for our body. This is a golden rule all of us should start practicing. With sufficient water intake, our skin will look better, our metabolism will speed up, will have plenty more energy, all toxins will be flushed out of our system quickly and we’ll generally feel much better and much more energized.

Detox water process pretty much depends on how long you’ve smoked. Make drinking water regularly a part of your diet. Add some lemon or lime juice if you want some extra flavor in your water.

Step it up

Exercising is an amazing way to improve your overall health and detox your body from toxins through sweating. During workout, all the body damaging cells are released through the sweat. When you drink water after your workout or during, those cells are replaced with clean, chemical-free water Further, exercising is known to improve cell regeneration and circulation so that’s yet another reason to start working out. The lung capacity you lost while smoking will, in time, regain its strength, too.

Eat green

Any detox diet means eating healthy, with plenty of greens and much water. Green veggies are rich in glucosinolates. According to latest research, these are vitamins and mineral compounds that appear to reduce the development of cancerous cells. They are available at any grocery store or market, so don’t  worry about having troubles getting them. Eat them regularly and daily. Veggies like broccoli, spinach, turnips, collard greens, kale, radishes, cabbage, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts are great choices. Also, include detox teas in your diet as they are made especially with the purpose to help your body flush out all the harmful toxins it gathered throughout years.

When embarking on a journey of detoxication from cigarettes you need to have all the patience in the world, I’m not going to lie. A lot of willpower and time is needed too. To ensure they won’t fall of the wagon, some people even start therapy, counseling, join support groups or turn to hypnosis. If you feel these would be appropriate options for you, go ahead.

You should know that this detox process is an individual experience and not everyone needs the same amount of time to succeed. Some people have experienced several failures before they managed to quit for good. So, do not despair. Will power, our tips and determination are your mayor tools for this project – make sure you stick to them!
