The Ebola virus is an hemorrhagic fever, which usually ends up with the death of the patient. This is not a new virus. It was seen in 1976 years in Africa for the first time.

The disease is caused by the Ebola virus. People get this disease from the monkeys, chimpanzees, gorillas, fruit bats, porcupines, forest antelope. Among people this disease is spread through secretions and infected blood. The virus can be also transmitted through an object which the patient has been in contact.

The clinical picture

After the incubation period of several days, the disease causes high fever, headache, muscle and stomach ache, diarrhea and extreme fatigue. Also itching and redness in the eyes, skin rash, burning throat, vomiting blood and bloody diarrhea. In the first week the disease causes chest pain, blindness and death. Those with wakened immunity will probably not survive, but those that have a strong immune system have high chances of surviving.

The diagnosis is based on the epidemiological and the clinical picture. If that’s not enough than it can be confirmed with the virus isolation and serological tests.

A symptomatic therapy is used. Due to the possible bacterial super-infections antibiotics are given. The patients are isolated and the doctors and nurses wear protection suites, shoes, gloves, masks and glasses.
